“…it’s that combination of sweetness and unearthliness, of accessible pop and trippy psychedelia, that make Summer Above so appealing…and so hard to get a grip on. And yet, if you lie perfectly still, the combination makes utter sense. It’s space rock made with warm organic instruments, pop filtered through the language of the subconscious, and, finally, a waking daydream too beautiful to shake off.” – Dusted Magazine

…has a yearning quality that’s all their own.” 4 out of 5 Stars – Mojo

4 out of 5 Stars – Uncut

The stately pop songs on Speck Mountain’s debut full-length Summer Above are made up of liquid organ drones and sacramentally simple guitar lines, shimmering in a psychedelically corrupt gospel haze behind Marie-Claire Balabanian’s effortlessly emotive vocals. Filled in with slow-motion funk bass-lines, electric piano, blanched-out sax, one lonely melodica, and enough tape elay to stretch from Pacific sea caves all the way to the Northern lights—everything here echoes, everything glows.

Recorded at John McEntire’s Soma Electronic Studios in Chicago, and Dubway in New York, the sound palette takes in the history of mind-altered music without sounding like any of it in particular. But the songwriting is direct and accessible, lending itself naturally to multi-instrumentalist Kate Walsh’s languid soul shadings. And if you hear organic strains of electronic growing in the deeper areas of the mix, then Speck Mountain’s sonic alchemy is working, because no synths were used on this record…

  1. Summer Above
  2. Hey Moon
  3. Girl Out West
  4. Midnight Sun
  5. Stockholm
  6. Fjord Song
  7. Chlorine Fields

Burnt Brown Sounds is proud to release the first Valet single, “Fire”, limited to 500 copies on amber/gold vinyl. The song finds her connecting to compositional traditions she has hitherto avoided, but without sacrificing the unhinged spiritual energy or exploratory sonics of her more abstract material. It is, at once, an unabashed classic and something entirely new. The B-side, “Beachgaze Rendered”, is another exclusive, a dose of supremely convincing spacey ambience under an oceanic spell that’s two parts undertow, one part vortex. Get lost…

Speck Mountain are back with a new single and a new energy. The warm, melancholic bath of “Hey Moon” and Summer Above has given way to a dirtier, more assertive, though equally mesmerizing sound. That’s the A-side, a Honey Owens (aka, Valet) song from last year that Speck Mountain have turned up the rock quotient on significantly, courtesy of sax, an age’s old bass mantra, and Marie-Claire’s barbed guitar attack, transplanted direct from the most severely dosed basement on earth. On the flip, “Backslide” approaches the kind of wide-eyed gratification that electronica has promised in the past, but rarely delivered—with several degrees of treated organ pulsating around Karl’s sweetly protracted guitar tease. So here are two sides of Speck Mountain, showing the breadth of their vision.

  1. Blood Is Clean
  2. Backslide
  3. Backsliding “Solo Demo”
